![]() | I'm an Irish birder currrently living in Sweden. I've been birding from a young age, have travelled widely and have always been keenly interested in bird identification. This naturally extended to bird calls and songs as a means of helping to find good birds in the field. Despite paying close attention to calls and learning as many as possible, the arrival of the internet has seen a keening of interest in birding acoustics and I finally got my recording equipment in March 2012, a Telinga Stereo Dat Mic/Pro8 handle, coupled to a Marrantz 661 Recorder. A superb bit of kit which immediatly expanded my birding experience, looking forward to building up a decent library of reference material. Particularily interested in calls given by migrating birds, diurnal and nocturnal, looking forward to sessions recording these on passage. A large learning curve lies ahead as a fledging sound recorder, hopefully coming out the other end wiser, with a wider appreciation of birdsound... |

![]() | Hi, I live in Belgium and I discovered ornithology in 2007. Since then, I've been listening to bird songs with great interest. It makes a big difference to me when I can recognise them around me without even seeing them! I started recording bird songs in May 2011, with an Olympus LS11. I chose this material on the basis of Xeno Canto members comments. It seems to be a good and light equipment to start. But now, I dream of a Telinga! To edit my recordings I use Audacity. I try to avoid or minimise filtering because I feel it can alter the songs. |

![]() | I have been birding since I was five years old, and recording ever since my first trip to South America, when I realized how much I was missing by not having a recording rig. I am especially interested in neotropical avifauna, and am currently working as a guide for Tropical Birding. I spent the fall of 2009 as the volunteer bird guide at Cristalino Jungle lodge in Brazil, and three months in Peru. I've also recorded in the US, Panama, northwestern South America, and West Papua. | Anthony Dickins | I have seen better days. All the police and birds look very young now. But never mind, I don't get in a flap about it. My doc says I must not flap. He has recently clipped my wings and told me to sell my narrow boat. Thing is, should I get a new doctor? Nah, I'll sell the boat and save a lot of money on mooring fees etc. I will miss watching the ducks along the rivers and canals though. I live a stones throw from Southampton water on the New Forest side so must not complain. Past throwing stones now - too much bother bending down.... It is good to go and watch the waders fly in their undulating flocks waiting for the tide to uncover the mud. |
| Anthony Crease | I live in El Pauji in the southern Gran Sabana, Venezuela and my spare time is pretty much dedicated to bird observation, particularly vocalizations. I use a Sennheiser mic with an Edirol recorder. We greatly enjoy sharing with visitors our potential 500+ species along the Pauji road. |

![]() | My main interest is echolocation in bats and I am presently collecting echolocation calls from all over Indonesia. Apart from ultrasound, I am also interested in audio and if possible I collect soundscapes (stereo) from rainforests in Indonesia before they are all gone. Since I inevitably record birds this way I will ask members of the forum every now and then to help ID recordings. In the 90s I recorded a large amount of mainly european birds, now in the Humboldt archive in Berlin. I have lived in the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France and presently live in Bogor, Indonesia. |
Arnold Meijer
![]() | I'm a Dutch Birder living on the coast in Katwijk where I have found a Daurian Jackdaw in 1995. I'm a twitcher since the early eighties and went on birdingtrip to various countries in South-America, North-America, Africa, Europe and Asia (all time favorite). I started recording with a Sony Minidisc and a small Sennheiser and made a lot of horrendous recordings in Peru, which, thank God, are all lost. Later in Vietnam it went much better, but I found out that the Sony Minidisc made a background noise so I switched over to a Sony Proffesionall Walkman with a Sennheiser 67m that I have used in Sabah and Thailand (fifht trip). The analoge tapes, however, were a nuisance so this year in February, prior to a trip to Eagle Nest, I got myself an Olympus LS-10. I love it! My recording is mostly inspired by Jelle Scharring and my recordings can also be found on his Birds of tropical Asia. |

| Brian Cox | Been birding since the mid 70’s initially in the UK and got into world birding in the late 80’s, mainly in the neotropics but recently did a 6 month trip to SE Asia. Started recording in the mid 1990’s with some basic sound gear (Sony TCM 59V + ME66 mic) but last year I bought a Olympus LS10 and I’m very impressed with it. Having an internal and external drive I can have all my pre-loaded sounds on the internal one and then record direct onto the external one, so removing the need for a 2nd machine. However you do need a 20dB booster amp with the sennheiser ME66 mic. |

Led 2 ornithological expeditions to Volcan Sumaco. Found a new bird species for Ecuador and have published on bird behavior and range extensions. Banded Ground-Cuckoo recently seen was my 1400th species for Ecuador. |

![]() | A full time guide for Field Guides since 1987 and a big fan of recording bird vocalizations. For many years, I recorded with a Sony TCM-5000. More recently, I have used MD and HiMD for digital recordings. Since 2008, I have switched to a Sony PCM-D50 digital recorder that I use with a Sound Devices MP-1 preamp and a K6/ME-66 Sennheiser mic. Most of my field work has been in North and Central America, as well as Australia. When I can find the time I hope to contribute a great deal more to Xeno Canto. XC is a great resource for birders and biologists. I can be contacted at: cdbenesh AT cox.net |

![]() | I am a UK birder living in North Cumbria. I have been interested in bird sounds for many years and have recently started making recordings. I use a Sony MD recorder and ATUS Telemike. The MD format allows me to keep all the original recordings. The compact set-up suits me as it allows me to carry photographic equipment also. Producing sonagrams has given me a much better understanding of what I am hearing. |

![]() | Started watching birds at a young age, but did not become an avid birder until 1991. Most of my experience has been limited to the Northeastern United States. I have an excellent ear for bird songs, calls, and flight notes. I find nocturnal migration extremely fascinating and have spent many long nights listening to the busier night migrations using an OldBird.org-style rooftop-mounted microphone. I now try to record migrations most nights using Raven Pro software. I credit night flight call guru Bill Evans for sucking me into the field of night migration study in the late-1990s. Many of my recordings are purely for documentation purposes, and are almost never of high quality for major audio production (CDs/DVDs). I hope to add more examples as time allows, and hope that these examples are useful to someone. |

![]() | Email: halmahera@hotmail.com I recently completed a PhD on bird, ant, reptile and mammal habitat/disturbance/biogeographic patterns in East and West TIMOR and Lesser Sunda Islands. I've mostly worked on birds of Nusa Tenggara, firstly with Birdlife International - Indonesia Programme (1997-2002). I've visited many of the Nusa Tenggara & Banda Sea islands with recordings from Lembata, Pantar, Alor, Atauro, Wetar, Damar, Roti, Timor, Semau, Kisar, Romang, Leti, Sermata and Babar. Since 2002, I've worked in Timor-Leste and have camped at about 30 locations over 120 nights. I should have multiple recordings of the landbirds, including a lot of variation. I hope the Timor calls might be a useful resource for Timorese students and managers. I've mostly used a Sony Professional Tape, but now are using a much lighter Olympus LS-10 SD card recorder. ![]() | An obsessive-compulsive birder, and a wildlife biologist by day. I'm convinced that I get as excited about bird vocalizations as I do about birds. I have been birding for about 27 years, and have always loved hearing, enjoying, and trying to understand not only what birds were talking, but what they were saying. A fellow xeno-canto contributor, Ryan O'Donnell, introduced me to the recording process, and I became a convert. I use an Olympus digital voice recorder (LS-10) that is usually hooked up to a Sennheiser ME-67 shotgun microphone with a K6 power module. I edit my recordings using Audacity and RavenLite 1.0. |

![]() | I am an increasingly obsessed amateur who has found his 'calling' in studying and enjoying bird song. I began birding in my mid 20s, but it is only since about 2005 that I have immersed myself in the subject and sought to devote myself to increasing our understanding of birds and their lives. I am currently writing a book on bird songs in the media and I use this site extensively to aide my research. In 2010 I bought my own recording rig, and now contribute recordings here and to the Macaulay LNS. I'm using a Marantz PMD661 recorder with a Sennheiser ME66/K6 shotgun mic. I spent all of 2011 traveling South America and recording every chance I had. All submitted sounds were obtained naturally (without playback) unless otherwise indicated. I also generally don't use editing or filtering. ![]() | You won't meet a more fanatic birder. My first major birding trip was overland from UK to India (through Afghanistan and Iran), followed a few years later with a trip from Egypt through the Sudan to Kenya (it took 8 months!). Sadly, I had no recording gear in those days... I subsequently spent about 12 years based in Southeast Asia, doing my PhD in Malaysia and later a post-doc at Danum Valley, Sabah. After that I lived in Thailand and then five years in Indonesia before moving to the neotropics. I was based in the beautiful Andean town of Cusco (Peru) for nearly seven years whilst traveling extensively throughout the neotropics and elsewhere in pursuit of good birding. In 2009, however, I moved back to Malaysia and am now based there for the foreseeable future. I used to work in bird conservation (for IUCN, BirdLife International etc) but now I work mainly as a bird guide. I presently lead tours for Birdtour Asia- www.birdtourasia.com. I was using a Sony TCM5000 (modified bird version) for recording until mid 2008 but now use a Roland Edirol R-09 (and a Marantz PMD661 before it inexplicably stopped working). My microphone is a Sennheiser ME66 connected to the recorder using a Shure A96F. I used to think that this was a great setup (especially when combined with a pair of 10x42 Swarovision bins!) but I have now had to bin three R-09's because the microphone input has stopped functioning properly- I think partly due to the rough nature of the Shure A96F input jack). I am not starting to use an Olympus LS-11 - and will let you know how it works out! The majority of my original recordings made on tapes are deposited at BLOWS in UK. Many of my recent digital recordings have been uploaded to the Avian Vocalizations Center http://avocet.zoology.msu.edu/. These will eventually also be uploaded to Xeno-canto as mp3 files. |
| Fred Prak | My name is Fred Prak and I record birdsounds during migration counts on "Telpost-Haarzuilens" near Utrecht in the Netherlands. So most of my recordings are flight calls of migrating birds. I use a MD disk recorder with an improvised parabolic microphone. Unfortunately there is always a lot of background noise on the recording site, this is produced by one of the busiest highways of the Netherlands the A2 and the main dutch airport nearby. That is the reason that I filter most recordings to get an better "view" on the bird calls. My main goal in sound recording is to collect migration flight calls which can be used by other birders to recognize migrating species. |

I do my research work at Cozumel Island, site that interests me because the ecological value of their unique-enemic animal species and the current ecological problems due by urban growth that afect birds. I recently discovered the world of sounds and I founded in Bioacoustics a novel tool to study the effects of noise that humans do with our machines on the songs of birds. Acoustic ecology seems an interesting area from the scientific point of view, but it is also important to me from a cultural and artistic point of view. |

I have always been a very avid birder having grown up in the Kruger National Park, and in many ways sound recording is just another step in the process of learning more about birds and developing a greater knowledge about this, and nature in general. |

![]() | Dutch birder, made many private worldbirding trips, always with my (birding!) spouse Nollie, a biologist. See my website for our trip reports. There are/were many sounds on my website too, and I am glad to have donated them all at the start-up of XenoCanto. Most of the recordings were made with a Sony Walkman Professional cassette recorder or a Sony minidisc, with a small Sennheiser shotgun. Nowadays, I mostly only bring our Olympus LS-11 recorder. |

While birding, I don't like to shlep a lot of gear, so I do all my recordings with a simple point-and-shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot SX-40. Works well for me! My birding blog is at http://johnvandort-ontheroad.blogspot.com/. |

![]() | I am an ornitho-something-or-other. I am also a wildlife and bird photography and naturalist field guide working in Latin America, Africa and Alaska. I worked as a guide at La Selva in Ecuador, did a little population biology research at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology and now have created/own some travel companies.
I absolutely love xeno-canto (it's nice to be surrounded by fellow bird nerds!) and want to thank all the recordists for providing such great mp3's that have helped me and my clients identify the birds on my trips. I have been birding the neotropics for 25+ years but still consider myself a beginner. I am interested in all varieties of birds, not just obscure ones. I appreciate their natural beauty, unusual behaviors and esoteric oddities. My websites: Expedition Wild, Belize Birding Tours (new in 2011) and Flyfish Alaska. |

Jumped on to the MD-wagon with a Sony MZR-900 and a Sennheiser MKE-300, then saluting the introduction of solid state recorders and purchased a Fostex FR2-LE. Not really happy with the handling properties I changed to a Marantz PMD-661. Now mainly using a Telinga PRO-6 with a Stereo Dat mic, complemented with a Sennheiser ME-66/K6 shotgun as a backup. ![]() | I'm a french birdwatcher living in China Shenzhen. I decide to spend time on bird's songs and calls recording because i realyze that this is the key to identify most of the skulker chinese birds... So i do hope i can give a small contibution on it, in return of the good help provided by xeno-canto to me this past year. |

![]() | I'm a photographer and an ornithologist, and I've many times had help with determining a species of bird through its song and call. That's how it is; you often hear a bird before you see it, and you know from the sound what kind of bird it is, and from there you either ignore the "uninteresting" ones or quickly perk up to try spot the bird you're listening to. Xenocanto is an excellent sound database that I've had lots of use for. |

![]() | Hello folks, I'm a dedicated birder, roaming all over the world and rather new to sound recording. I made some recordings at Frasers Hill, Malaysia in the nineties, some of them are on 'Birds of Tropical Asia' from my younger brother Jelle. At the end of 2010 I got me a Olympus LS5 (is there any difference with the LS10?) and now I'm getting enthousiastic again. What a nice gadget. I'm saving now for a real microphone like a Senheisser. I will try to upload recordings regularly. Kees (CJG) Scharringa, Heiloo, Netherlands |

After spending most of my life in New York City I recently moved to El Valle de Anton, Panama, where I live with my wife, Rebeca, and young daughter, Magdiel (a budding birder!). I am working almost full-time as a birding guide, for both Ancon Expeditions and for my private company, Panama Gateway (www.panamagateway.com). I am also the propietor of The Canopy Report (www.canopyreport.com), a website dedicated to discussions regarding rare birds in central Panama. My interest in the birds of Panama borders on the obsessive. My recordings are split between those collected from a video-mic connected to my camcorder to the better ones from my Sennheiser directional- the difference is obvious! |

![]() | I started birding in the UK during late 1970s at the tender age of 8. Since the early 1990s I have been intrigued by mimicry in bird song and calls. Started recording after getting a cheap child's parabolic mic with an olympus VN-3100PC which records .wav files. Hope to upgrade to more pro gear but I need to make sure I stay interested enough!! |

![]() | I am interested in birds and also record bird sounds since my youth. First I used cassette recorders, SONY Walkman recorders, then I switched to DAT in the 90ies and prefer a binaureal microphone: DCM-8, PCM-M1 and now the OLYPUS LS-11 with OKM Pro (Soundman). I also test AKG and other mics. Most of the time I use a RememBird II for recordings made in the field. I recorded and birded in Europe and Asia (Java/Bali). http://www.bird.at Instead of posting more recordings to my website I promise to contribute to this GREAT project. Proud of being part of it. Original recordings in full resolution / quality are kept for further (re-)analysis. Happy Birding and Sound Recording! Martin |

Originally British I lived overseas in the middle east, North Africa and the Caribbean and now live in the United States. I got into recording in April of 2008, though I had made a few tape recordings with a dictaphone previously. I Started out with a Sony digital dictaphone but now I use an Olympus LS-10, which I've had since 2009 and a Sennheiser ME67 as of June 2011. ![]() | Already loved birds and birdwatching at the age of 4.. and I expect my interest to last for life. I never travelled much but watch birds mostly quite close to my hometown in southern Germany, where I discovered a Scops Owl in 2010 - and wasn´t able to record it properly, because I didn´t have any idea about equipment etc! The poor recording got lost after some time.. Quite disappointing, so I decided to get an Olympus LS 5 which makes a quite good job. It´s with me anytime I go out birding. I´m looking forward to all-day migration counting in autumn and hope to get some nice recordings of rare birds then. |

| Richard E. Webster | All recordings are with Sennheiser ME-67. Since early 2008, all were recorded with a Fostex FR-2LE, prior to that with various Sony Minidiscs. Very few recordings are in response to playback, and those are labeled RPB on filename and hopefully in remarks. Many recordings are edited with a graduated high pass filter, intending to remove nothing within the bird's frequency range. Intervals are not shortened without noting that, except for the occasional very brief glitch. If you have a serious project, I can get you unedited wav files for most cuts, especially 2008 on. But be patient--I am periodically away for weeks at a time at work or play, and if my non-reply goes on for too long, drop me another polite e-mail to stir me up and I really will try to help. ![]() | I am keenly interested in all things avian, especially their vocalizations. I've recorded in a variety of habitats and locations all across the USA as well as Ecuador, Peru, and the southern Brazilian Amazon. I now primarily use a Sound Devices 702 with a 22" Telinga dish + Sennheiser MKH 20 or ME62, though now most of my audio on the archive was made with a modified Marantz PMD660. |
| Ted Cooper | Birds have long distracted and captivated me. They have consumed some prime chunks of an otherwise productive life. I believe that a planet filled with such marvels is a richer place. Birds symbolize to me the essence of life, its tenuous, marvelous, and persistent mission to survive. When I was younger, I trekked the rainforests of Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica with microphones and cameras. I've too many sounds, some great, some from the bad-old analog days on cassette, others include a few mouth-watering digital tidbits. I've skulked here for too long, and now it is time to get the yellow-fungus-ed toes wet, to add a few voices to the cyber-soundscape. |
| Ted Miller | I study bird sounds, and have special interests in Charadriiformes and Piciformes (e.g. Piping Plover -- Can. J. Zool. 83:579–595, 2005). Recently I've started some work on anatomy of the vocal tract (e.g. eiders -- J. Avian Biol. 38:224-233, 2007; murres -- J. Orn. DOI 10.1007/s10336-008-0304-z). |

![]() | I am a British birder living in Beijing since 2010. I only occasionally record sounds using a handheld video camera (Panasonic HDC SD10). I hope to contribute something to the fantastic resource that is Xeno-Canto. It has been incredibly helpful to me as I get to grips with China's birds. |

![]() | I am a birder from The Netherlands, already highly interested in bird vocalisations from the early days of my 'birding career' on. I like very much to travel to see and record as many bird species as possible, although I'm hindered somewhat in doing so by a health problem. For equipment, I am now using a small directional video microphone combined with a Marantz SD-card recorder (which is a lot better than the Sony Walkman WM-6 used until recently!). |

![]() | Born 1947. Archaeologist and museum leader up to 2009, living near the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany. Learned bird songs when 10 years old and took first records with my father about 1960. Newly interested since 2005, also with recording birds in forest, pastures, settlements and agricultural landscape. Normally, I record calls and songs by bringing out the recording instruments (oftenly still in the night) and see later, what I've trapped. Therefore I use cheap recorders, now Zoom H1 and H2. For analysing and filtering those very long records I use Audacity.
My recordings are free for non-commercial use, also when altered. If you contact me (h.v.arnold |
